New food truck park planned for Lake Street in McCall

McCall could have a new food truck park – pending city approval.

Dubbed The Spot, the food truck park would be located at 149 E Lake Street adjacent to the Yacht Club overlooking the lake.

The .93-acre space would have five food truck spaces for licensed operators. There is planned outdoor seating, bear-proof trash containers, electrical hookups for power, and a stormwater retention basin.

“The soils are free draining and slope gently towards the lake.  The surface that the food trucks will be on will drain easily and the runoff will sheet drain to a shallow depression just to the north of the food truck area, capturing any surface water that doesn’t immediately percolate,” the application said about stormwater management.

The Spot’s website lists a few of its vendors, including Sticky Rice, an Asian cuisine truck, Lake Fork Cafe, and Gelato A’La Moad, which serves up traditional Italian ice cream. There is also a rotating vendor list that shows Off The Grid Pizza on location multiple days in July.

According to Instagram, the owners of the lot had one food truck operating on it last summer.

Several neighbors submitted comments to the city regarding the food truck park application. Most who were against it had issues with parking.

“Food service businesses require a lot of parking. The closest parking lot to this proposed development is across the street in Market Square where I own businesses,” Cori Rice, the owner of the Christmas House said. “Food truck employees and patrons will prevent the six permanent Market Square business employees and customers from parking in our own lot. Policing the misuse of our lot is already a daily occurrence, especially in the summer months.”

Many residents who supported the application believed it would benefit other businesses in the community.

“I also believe this will increase foot traffic that extends their walk east of Yacht Club, creating more business for Market Square,” McCall resident Brandon Colglazier said. “A rising tide raises all boats! I would like to see this pass. There are times in the busy season that local families have nearly zero quick food options, and restaurants requiring reservations due to tourist influx. This will help to alleviate that issue.”

The applicant, James Harrison, is seeking design and scenic route reviews from the McCall Planning and Zoning Commission. The meeting is on May 2 at 4:30 p.m.
