You Asked: What happened to the plan to build a new Maverik in McCall?

A plan to bring a Maverik gas station to McCall turned into a sour debacle that lasted over a year where both residents and city officials fought against the fuel station.

Last fall, a Maverik representative presented an updated plan to the McCall Planning and Zoning Commission for a gas station at 402 N. Third St. The meeting was delayed but a vote to deny the application was imminent.

Rather than continue the fight, Maverik moved to withdraw its application.

The history

The city first heard plans for a Maverik gas station in December 2020. During the first meeting, the applicant was met immediately with opposition from the public and commissioners. This was the start of a year-and-a-half-long fight.

Maverik would go through multiple redesigns over the journey — but nothing seemed to satisfy the commission or townspeople. The final version of the Maverik would have been 5,041 square feet with 12 gas pumps. The original plan called for 28 gas pumps.

According to the commission and residents, the location, traffic, the design not fitting the McCall aesthetic, and the hours of operation were all problems.

There was even a petition created by residents to stop the project that gained over 700 signatures.

This gas station would have replaced the Maverik that sits at 622 N. Third St. just a few blocks away. But since plans never materialized, the 622 N. Third St. location remains in operation.
