Project would add condos, retail by busy McCall marina

A project would build a series of five condo units and retail space right across from the Mile High Marina near the busy boat ramp in McCall.

The property is registered in the names of John H. Brandt and Orah I. Brandt of Nampa, the family whose name graces the Brandt Auditorium at the Nampa Civic Center and Brandt Fine Arts Center at Northwest Nazarene University.

The project, dubbed The Hardy, would add an 18,263-square-foot set of four-bedroom homes on the second and third levels, with commercial space along Lake St., across from the marina. Right now, the lots are used for overflow parking for marina customers.

The property has street access on three sides. The residential units will be accessed from Mill St. to the east of Lake and feature driveways and garages on the second level of the buildings.

Floor plans show a living room and three bedrooms on the middle level, while the top floor features indoor/outdoor spaces with a kitchen, dining, living space, and a spa, all arranged toward views of Payette Lake, as well as a primary bedroom and bathroom.

Some of the units also have a rooftop deck.

The commercial spaces are shown with accordion doors and small outdoor public spaces with planters and seating.

On July 30th, the McCall Planning and Zoning Commission recommended design review approval on a 6-1 vote.

Commissioner Dave Petty said he didn’t feel the project met the city’s design code.

“It’s not compatible with form, line, color and texture of its surroundings,” Petty said. It’s a dramatic difference from the rest of the neighborhood as far as color and glass and, it dramatically dominates the vistas of the water.”

Other commissioners disagreed.

“I think it’s a nice-looking building,” Commissioner Tom Mihlfeith said.“It is earth tone. It’s a little modern in its design, but we can’t build everything to what it looked in the 50s. I think it will clean up that corner really nice with the pavers and the aesthetic.”
