The Idaho Transportation Department is still chipping away at summer roadwork on Idaho 55.
Ahead of holiday weekend travel, the department released an update on project progress along the highway and told motorists “to expect delays.”
Work to repair the Rainbow Bridge near Smiths Ferry is ongoing, but will pause for Labor Day Weekend before resuming Sept. 3, according to ITD. Work days on the bridge will include Fridays starting next week. Intermittent crane work could cause temporary 15-minute closures.
The repairs this summer to the Rainbow Bridge are a precursor to a larger project to build a replacement bridge. That work is expected to start in 2028 and could result in the demolition of the original bridge that was built in 1933 and is on the National Registry of Historic Places.
North of McCall, work on Little Goose Creek Bridge is expected to be complete by early September. Though the highway re-opened to two lanes earlier this week, crews will continue working over the next few weeks to “apply final pavement markings and wrap up work,” the release said.
Meanwhile, ITD expects to wrap up sealcoat work on the highway between Horseshoe Bend and Banks this week.
