The trip down the hill to Costco might get easier, with possible Idaho 55 location

The trip to Costco to stock up might get easier for residents of Valley and Adams counties. The retailer considering building yet another new store in the Treasure Valley, this time in Eagle.

The wholesale retail giant is soliciting for a new warehouse store and associated fuel station at the corner of Idaho 55 and Hill Rd., according to documents viewed by Valley Lookout.

The Costco project has not been formally applied for with the City of Eagle and may not proceed, and would need approval from the city to move forward.

What’s planned

A preliminary site plan shows a 161,522 square foot Costco store near Idaho 55, as well as a fuel center and gas pumps placed at the corner of Hill Rd. and Horseshoe Bend Rd. The plan calls for 927 parking stalls on the 24.7-acre site. The site plan shows two retail pad sites at the corner of Hill Rd. and Idaho 55.

The project is on a site once envisioned for a lifestyle center project similar to the Village at Meridian, as BoiseDev reported in 2018. The envisioned project would spread out over 27 acres on the former site of the Masterpiece Quarry along Idaho 55. The site operated as a quarry up until 2003 and has sat largely vacant since. The project, dubbed Quarry Village, envisioned a brewery, restaurants, theater, and hotel, as well as residential and office space.

The City of Eagle signed a development agreement for a mixed-use project on the site in 2021. Local firm Arthur Berry later listed the property for sale. It remains listed on the commercial real estate site LoopNet.

The site is on Eagle’s eastern border near the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. It would give the retailer access to fast-growing areas of Eagle, including Dry Creek Ranch, Avimor, as well NW Boise, and shorten the trip for Valley County and Horseshoe Bend residents who travel to the Costco in N. Meridian to stock up.

Costco notes on its media website that “we cannot comment on locations that will be opening more than three months from today.”

Costco’s growth

If the project moves forward, it could mark the fifth Costco location in the Boise area for the Washington-based retail giant.

There are currently three open locations. Costco first opened a store at Franklin Rd. and Milwaukee St. in 1988, which later moved to its current site on Cole Rd. in 2003. The company then built a store in the Treasure Valley Marketplace development in Nampa, followed by a store that opened in N. Meridian in 2020. It is working to gain approval for a site in S. Meridian near Kuna, as BoiseDev reported.

The company is also currently working on a remodel and expansion of its Boise store.
