Detours and lane closures: McCall kicks off summer roadwork, with two big closures

A long-term closure of Mission Street in McCall begins today, along with a detour that affects those traveling to and from Ponderosa State Park.

First up, Mission Street will remain closed between West Lake Street (Idaho 55) and Idaho Street until the weekend of July 4. The closure will then be reinstated on July 7 and is expected to last into September.

The work involves replacing sewer and water lines beneath the roadway, adding stormwater drainage infrastructure, and rebuilding the street with new road base and asphalt. The roadway will also be widened to add bicycle lanes.

The combined cost of the project is about $1 million for the improvements, which span about 975 feet of roadway.

The City of McCall is paying about $620,000 for the work, most of which is funded by the city’s streets local-option tax. The Water Department is paying about $31,000 to replace pipelines, meters, and fire hydrants.

Sewer work

The other $388,000 is funded by the Payette Lakes Recreational Water and Sewer District, which manages the sewer system in McCall.

The district is replacing a leaky sewer line beneath Mission Street while the roadway is torn up for repairs by the city, Manager Jeff Bateman said.

“We wanted to replace the line before the road was repaved,” Bateman said. “We have a large amount of inflow and infiltration in the line. It’s an old clay pipe with some big bellies and offset joints, too.”

The pipeline replacement will free capacity in the sewer system, but not enough to change existing allowances for new sewer permits in the area.

The sewer work is expected to begin next week and should be complete within about a month. Few impacts to sewer users are expected.

“There will be a small window for a few homes when they are getting connected to the new line, but nothing long-term,” Bateman said.

Davis Avenue work resumes

Next, work on the route to Ponderosa on Davis Ave. One-way northbound traffic will be allowed from Blue Water Circle to Ruby Street for the duration of the project. Southbound traffic will be required to detour around the work zone. Updated lane closures and detour information will be posted here by the city.

Work is expected to be complete by mid-October. Once complete, Davis Avenue from Lick Creek Road to Blue Water Circle will have new asphalt, bicycle lanes, and improved stormwater drainage. A separated pedestrian will be built pathway along the east side of the road between Lick Creek Road and Fairway Drive.

The work will also replace city water lines and pave and stripe the Davis Beach Parking Lot at the corner of Lick Creek Road and Davis Avenue.

The $3.1 million contract for this summer’s work caps a rebuild of Davis Avenue between Lick Creek Road and Thompson Lane that began in 2023.

The total cost of the project is about $5.7 million, which is funded mostly by grants, the streets local-option tax, and the Water Department.
