McCall makes July 4th lakefront park alcohol ban permanent

The City of McCall has made a code change to its Fourth of July alcohol ban.

This will be the city’s seventh year banning booze at lakefront parks around the 4th. The former resolution said the city council “may prohibit” alcohol at designated parks from July 1 through July 7 – but a change in the code wording makes the rule a bit more definite.

“Unless otherwise expanded or limited by resolution of the McCall City Council, the possession and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited in city parks adjacent to Payette Lake,” the updated code said.

The rule goes into effect on July 3 at 8 p.m. and runs through July 5 at 8 a.m. every year. The city will post signs at least 24 hours before with restriction reminders.

Last year, the city put out a survey to feel out residents’ opinions on keeping the ban. Out of 316 respondents, almost 72% of people felt restrictions should remain in place.

According to McCall code, penalties could be a misdemeanor, a fine of up to $300, and/or six months of jail time.

The ban was originally put in place after large and rowdy parties on the water during the holiday. It includes Art Roberts Park, Legacy Park, Brown Park, Rotary Park, and Davis Beach Park.
