“Innovative”: McCall council approves new public art project

McCall City Council unanimously approved a new public art project.

The Payette Land Trust and the City of McCall are teaming up to launch “Conserving the Heart of Idaho,” an art project which aims to build “awareness” and “inspire” mountain communities to preserve open lands.

Selected artists will design a 38-inch tall and 40-inch wide heart sculpture made out of fiberglass. The finished product will be displayed for nine-months, rotating to different locations around McCall, New Meadows, Donnelley, and other surrounding areas – although exact sites have not been determined.

Only one sculpture is planned for 2022, with the winning artist to be announced in March. The 9-month exhibition will begin in June and end in February 2023.

“I think it’s cool, adaptive, innovative,” council member Lyle Nelson said.

If the project is well-received, three additional heart sculptures will be added each year, for a total of up to 15 sculptures.

Selected artists will be awarded $1,000 to complete their masterpiece.
